COURSE DESCRIPTION
& LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This course will provide public health professionals, students, Tribes and Tribal-serving organizations with information, tools, and resources on the use and function of Service Animals, Therapy Animals, Emotional Support Animals, and pets.

After completing this course, users will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between Service Animals. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs), Therapy Animals, and Pets by:

    1. Defining the roles/functions of each category of animals
    2. Recognizing the benefits /advantages in today’s society, including current evidence-based research, of each category of animals

  2. Understand the laws and regulations associated with Pets and Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) by:

    1. Recognizing that states and municipalities may have their own rules and regulations that apply to pets
    2. Identifying the requirements needed to meet the limited regulations for an ESA and where they are permitted when accompanying an individual

  3. Understand the regulations associated with Therapy Animals by:

    1. Identifying the requirements needed for an animal to be used for Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT)
    2. Identifying examples of eligibility requirements set by an AAT certifying organization that an animal must meet
    3. Reviewing where AAT is currently being utilized

  4. Recognize legal/ethical considerations for professional interactions with individuals using Service Animals by:

    1. Identifying the requirements needed for an animal to be designated as a Service Animal
    2. Indicating where Service Animals are allowed and not allowed when accompanying individuals with disabilities
    3. Recalling which questions are permitted by law to as ask a person with a Service Animal
