COURSE DESCRIPTION This module will describe two national U.S. efforts to define public health in the late 20th century and various aspects of the public health system: its values, conceptual framework, cultural aspects, and principal areas of focus. What is the vision and mission of public health? What are the core functions of public health? The essential services of public health? How do those vital activities of public health get translated into programmatic activities to improve the health status of the population? Public health roles and responsibilities are as complex and varied as are the health and safety problems in the U.S. population. One can identify key efforts over the past twenty years to define critical functions and roles necessary to maintain a population of healthy people. This course will describe the history of those efforts and the meaning of core functions and essential public health services.
